Our Projects: Ironmonger Row Baths

The Baths was originally opened in 1931 by Finsbury Borough Council offering local people the chance to have a bath or use the wash-house (for laundry) at a time when the majority of local residents did not have access to such facilities in their houses.

By 2008 the Grade II Listed Building was very tired and in need of major investment if it was to serve the community for a further 80 years. Using £4M of regeneration funding provided by EC1 New Deal for Communities combined with £12.5M capital from the Council, the decision was taken in June 2009 to proceed with this exciting transformation project.

Following extensive consultation with local people and existing centre users and stakeholders, Synergy worked with the council to formulate a clear and targeted brief.  The focus was to provide a centre that would meet the needs of local people whilst ensuring operational costs were minimised over the next 30 years.  As well as restoring and celebrating the historic role the Baths has played locally, the brief looked to retain the Grade II Listed features,  upgrade the facilities and improve accessibility throughout the building and provide an environmental sustainable development.
