Our Projects: Cheam School, Art Design and Technology Centre

Completed over a 14 month period works to provide a new art, design & technology centre coupled with new teaching and classroom facilities for the pre-prep department at Cheam School in Headley, Newbury.

The client’s specification was for the two storey building to have independent access points to separate the pre-prep children occupying the ground floor from the older children attending art, design & technology classes on the first floor. This was achieved through the unusual design and construction of a glass enclosed spiral staircase and pedestrian bridge formed in the adjacent existing building across to the new; these intrusive works were completed whilst the existing building remained in use, with minimal disruption to the day to day running of the school.

The building incorporated many ‘green’ features enabling this project to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good ‘rating. One of the most environmentally significant aspects of the project was the installation of a ground source heat pump,  constructed to a depth of approximately 100m, and now providing free sustainable heat in the winter alongside a passive ventilation system to provide cool air in the summer.
