Demolition begins at Canalside

Demolition of the first residential properties has begun as the multi-million pound development of the new Canalside community enters another exciting phase.

Work to start the removal of the 1950s homes commences the first phase of the residential part of the regeneration delivering 92 new homes, and follows diggers breaking ground at Bishop David Brown School in July to begin the construction of a state-of-the-art leisure centre. Completion of these first two phases is due mid-2021.

The other phases are planned to start on site in late 2020 and the whole scheme will be complete in six years.

The project involves building more than 1000 energy-efficient homes, half of which will be affordable housing. They will cater for people of all ages and include homes for the elderly, people with disabilities and sharers.

The development, which aims to create a new identity for a diverse population, will also include a hub providing shops, a doctors’ surgery, nursery and community centre.
