Our Projects: Bath Abbey, The Footprint Project

Nestled within the lively and historic heart of Bath, the Abbey has undergone an incredible transformation. The Footprint project comprised extensive repair and conservation work and the creation of much needed new spaces and amenities.

Now the Abbey can continue to play an active role in the community for many years to come, providing calm and flexible space to suit the needs of the public.

Synergy have been working alongside the Abbey and their design team since 2007 with the delivery phase of the project starting on site in May 2018.

A significant part of the £19.4m initiative involved restoring the Abbey’s collapsing floor, a precious part of the city’s heritage. All 891 ledgerstones, more than any other church in the country, were lifted from the floor, the surface beneath stabilised and the stones repaired and re-laid.

The Abbey has increased its energy efficiency by installing new LED lighting and an eco-friendly underfloor heating system using renewable energy from Bath’s famous hot springs.

The Kingston Buildings have been refurbished to include new meeting rooms, office space and a brand new Song School which is home to the Abbey’s choirs and visiting musicians.

In addition, the Abbey has a new learning space for school children and a new Interpretation Centre has been constructed within the existing vaults. The Abbey shop has also been completely transformed.
