The Story of Gardening wins Highly Commended Civic Trust 2021 Award

Synergy is delighted that The Story of Gardening and Tree Top Walkway project at The Newt in Somerset has received a Highly Commended Award at the Civic Trust Awards 2021.

This commendation is awarded to projects that have made a significant contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment, whilst being sustainable, accessible, and having provided a positive civic contribution.

The state-of-the-art interactive museum is situated on the edge of a small woodland area within the wider visitor attraction site of The Newt. Carefully designed using materials in keeping with its natural environment to minimise visual impact, the building sits in perfect harmony with nature. The simple interior and tall reflective glass facade ensure the woodland beyond remains a focal point.

‘The Viper’, an immersive treetop walkway, winds through the forest canopy, transporting visitors to the museum’s entrance nestled into the hillside.

“Beautifully built and fits into the landscape so well. The design approach to the building is a response to what appears to be the wider purpose of the surrounding estate, to celebrate the landscape and gardening.” – Judges’ Comments

“The surprise on finding a civic building in a historic landscape on the edge of an established woodland is something all visitors can enjoy and delight in.” – Civic Trust Awards 2021 Brochure

Working with Architects Stonewood Design, Hydrock Structural engineers and Beard Construction Synergy provided cost consultancy services on this impressive project.
