Expanding Music Provision at Charterhouse: A Symphony of Tradition and Modernity

Charterhouse boasts a rich musical heritage. Renowned British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was a pupil at the school during its early years in Godalming (1887 to 1890).

Today, many pupils receive instrumental or vocal lessons and participate in a wide range of musical activities. In recent years, several pupils have pursued professional music careers, furthering their studies at universities or music colleges.

Charterhouse is currently undertaking an ambitious project to expand the Ralph Vaughan Williams Music Centre, doubling the music department’s capacity. Synergy is delighted to be providing cost consultancy on this project, with works recently beginning on site.

The initiative aims to create a variety of performance and practice spaces that will enable pupils to fully explore their musical talents and interests. The project also includes a complete refurbishment and modernisation of the existing building.

Designed by Architects, Design Engine, a key aspect of this development is the new western facade, which will complement the aesthetic appeal of the Chapel. The undulating roofline of the new structure will echo the rhythmic pattern of the Chapel and reflect the geometry of the existing Music School.

Internally, the highlight of the new facility will be two state-of-the-art performance spaces: an orchestral room and a rock room, interconnected by a central recording studio. Additional features will include two classrooms, a music library, a technology room for digital musical composition, over 25 practice rooms, and an outdoor performance space with a courtyard. These enhancements will provide pupils with diverse musical experiences, ranging from classical compositions to contemporary audio production for computer games.
