A New Chapter for Pre-Prep at Cranleigh School

18 Mar 2026 | Project Update

Meeting Growing Demand

An exciting new extension dedicated to Pre-Prep pupils is taking shape at Cranleigh School, expanding provision for children aged 3 and 4 within the Roulston Building. Synergy is delighted to be providing Building Surveying services.

Surrounded by open fields and rolling Surrey hills, the school — divided between a Preparatory School and a co-educational Senior boarding school— offers one seamless journey from age 3 to 18.

The Roulston Building was constructed in response to rising pupil numbers within the Preparatory School and blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.

Since then, Cranleigh has identified the need to expand its offering to include dedicated spaces for Nursery and Reception pupils.

Will Newman, Head at Cranleigh Prep School said:

“From September this year we’ll be expanding our offer to parents who would like their children to benefit from a Cranleigh education at the very earliest stages of their development. I’ve been delighted with the Pre-Prep offer we introduced for Year 1 and 2 children and now we’re completing the picture with a Reception class and the addition of a Nursery. Every child will be seen and celebrated as we personalise each pupil’s learning journey to spark joy, curiosity and the confidence to grow.”

A Thoughtfully Designed Extension

The new two-storey modular extension is being built on the far side of the existing Roulston Building. Once complete, it will provide four new classrooms designed with flexibility and longevity in mind. Inside, the classrooms have been designed with moveable walls to support adaptable teaching styles.

A key priority for the project has been architectural continuity. The extension mirrors the first-floor decking and perimeter covered walkway of the original building. External walls are timber clad in Thermowood to complement the existing façade.

The area in front of the Roulston Building is being reimagined as a brand-new outdoor play space. Sure to delight pupils, a slide will provide a fun route from the first-floor decking straight to the play area below.

Following the installation of the modular units in February, works are advancing steadily towards a spring completion.
