Major changes are coming for academies eligible for CIF funding.
The Department for Education (DfE) is revamping how capital maintenance funds are accessed.
Instead of requiring schools to submit lengthy bids, the DfE will roll out a new programme in autumn 2028 to replace the Condition Improvement Fund, simplifying the process for qualifying Responsible Bodies to obtain essential maintenance funds.
The key to this transformation is school condition estate data. The DfE plans to establish clear expectations and technical standards for every Responsible Body.
In February 2026, the DfE launched “Manage Your Education Estate,” a digital service that consolidates estates guidance, data, tools, programmes, and funding into one platform. Additionally, common data and digital standards, structures, and guides will be published starting April 2026 to aid Responsible Bodies.
The DfE will be asking Responsible Bodies to make an annual return from autumn 2026 on how they are meeting the expectations in the School Estate Management Standards.
By 2028, two-way data sharing will enhance insights into school estates for both Responsible Bodies and the department.
This data-driven approach will give schools and trusts an important role in shaping their facilities. Collecting and sharing their own condition data with the DfE will mean they can directly influence the funding they receive.
With the new 2028 programme, the DfE is making capital maintenance funding easier to access, faster, and more efficient—allowing schools and colleges to concentrate on their core mission.
