Synergy cooking up a storm at Glastonbury Abbey

Synergy Bare Leaning and Bare are currently employed by the Trustees of Glastonbury Abbey as Quantity Surveyors and CDM Co-ordinators for the project being undertaken to conserve and consolidate the Abbot’s Kitchen at Glastonbury Abbey.

The Abbot’s Kitchen, which was built in the 14th Century, is the only structure within the Abbey grounds to remain virtually intact by retaining its roof following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The works being undertaken are to stabilise the existing condition of the structure to minimise the rate of further decay and to help preserve the maximum amount of historic fabric. This is being achieved by the removal of previous repairs and interventions, which are unsuitable and are causing distress to the fabric, and by replacing them with more appropriate sensitive materials, for example, removing cement pointing and replacing with lime mortar.

We are working alongside the Architect and Surveyor to the Fabric for Glastonbury Abbey, Alan Thomas, and M&E Consultants, Martin Thomas Associates. We are also involved on the same basis on the consolidation and conservation works to the Nave West doorway and Galilee, which is also currently underway.

Prior to commencement of these projects on site, we provided Cost Consultancy advice for these schemes, as well as for potential schemes to be undertaken to the Crypt, St Joseph’s Well and The Galilee Platform.
