Independent School Spotlight – Bradfield College

Synergy is one of the leading construction consultancy practices in the country specialising in independent schools.

We are proud that many of our independent school client relationships extend over decades and our work with Bradfield College is just one example. We first started working with the school in 1998 and since that time have completed over 45 projects providing Cost Consultancy, Project Management and Building Surveying Services. The projects range in diversity and size from planned preventative maintenance surveys right through to refurbishments, extensions and brand-new buildings. Below we outline details of just a few of these projects:

Dining Hall Extension:
The dining room and servery at Bradfield College. This two-phase project involved the refurbishment of the existing Grade II Listed dining hall to incorporate new heating, lighting, flooring and furniture. Phase two involved remodelling the servery to create a light, bright, contemporary space including a new pastry kitchen and dish-wash area. The space has been designed so that aromas from the pastry kitchen pump into the servery area to enhance the dining experience. Photo credit Matt Priestley.

Loyd House:
Extension of the Loyd boarding house. This project was carried in four phases around a live boarding house. Phase one was a new two storey extension comprising twelve single and two double study bedrooms, six showers, four WCs, as well as two new flats for the Matron and Resident Tutor. The completion of the extension allowed phased internal remodelling of the existing building across three further phases.

Re-Roofing:
Re-roofing of the Bloods Classrooms. This project is currently underway with a temporary roof installed on this Grade II Listed building. The project also includes refurbishment of classrooms to part of the building on the first and ground floor as well as refurbished toilets. We are also supporting the College with reroofing of the House on the Hill building which is currently on site. Photo credit Beard Construction.

Greek Theatre:
Restoration of the College’s Greek Theatre. Work included the restoration of the original stone seating and the construction of a new timber framed Skene to replace the demolished temple building. The `Skene’ was clad in shingles with sliding screens to form the backdrop to the stage. A new and striking entrance was created combining a granite paved `Agora’ and a galvanised steel viewing platform which cantilevered over part of the amphitheatre.

Science Block:
Science building. Work included the demolition of the previous building and the construction of a two-storey science block containing ten laboratories, three classrooms, three prep rooms, staff areas and the installation of all laboratory equipment, soft and hard landscaping to the exterior and all associated drainage and services work. Since this was constructed over a decade ago, we have worked with the College to remodel the laboratories.

St Andrew’s Church:
Conversion of the Grade II* Listed St Andrew’s Church into a study centre incorporating the library. The scheme includes a striking, contemporary link building adjoining the south transept, which leads into the main body of the study centre. The finished study centre will provide a mix of exciting learning environments including quiet zones, collaborative areas, brainstorming pods and seminar spaces. This project is currently in progress.

Other projects include:
• Blundells Sports Pavilion
• Faulkners Girls and Boys extensions
• Geography refurbishment
• Palmer Boarding House Refurbishment
• Snake Door Development
• Music Hall Refurbishment
• Staff Housing

As part of our ongoing relationship with Bradfield College, we have also provided cost planning advice to support the College to explore development strategies for the next ten years.

We very much enjoy working with the College and look forward to continuing to support them to deliver their development ambitions.

“Synergy have worked with the College for many years and I have had the pleasure of working particularly with the QS team lead by Rob Buckley since joining the College on a number of different projects including outline costs for our Campus Development Framework and from initiation to end of defects. The strong relationship that has been developed with the College, along with sound cost and contract advise and attention to detail has been key to the delivery of several complex projects. It’s incredibly reassuring to know that they are always there to provide professional advice and nothing ever seems too much trouble.”
