Our Projects: Westminster Abbey, New West Front Entrance

After a four month project, the west front of Westminster Abbey now provides step-free access to all. The west front is used by thousands each year, acting as the main exit route for visitors and the main entrance for worshippers. It is the first significant change to the west front in 25 years.

The scheme comprises new steps, bench seating and a new path leading up to the Great West Door that provides level access to the Innocent Victims’ Memorial.

Designed by Ptolemy Dean, the entrance incorporates materials used elsewhere in the Abbey such as Purbeck and Portland stone.

The project team had the challenge of adapting to Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and ensuring that the west front was completed before the King’s coronation in May.

Sawyer Fisher, who are part of Synergy Construction and Property Consultants LLP, provided cost consultancy services.
