An interview with Bryan Woodhouse on his promotion to Synergy Associate

Please join us in wishing Quantity Surveyor Bryan Woodhouse a huge congratulations for his recent promotion to an Associate. We interviewed Bryan to find out more about his journey, what the milestone means to him, and the experiences that helped shaped his career.

In what ways do you feel you will grow, both professionally and personally, as a result of this promotion?

This promotion is validation of my contributions and potential – it reinforces my confidence and signals the Partnership believes I am ready to take that next step in my professional career. The added responsibility will sharpen my leadership skills and I am looking forward to greater interaction with senior leadership and stakeholders.

Was there a specific project or moment that you believe was pivotal in your career advancement?

Rather than a single pivotal moment, I see my career progression as the result of consistent growth and self-awareness. As I’ve worked on new projects, I’ve adapted to unique challenges and have risen to new responsibilities – all of which have contributed to my natural development. As a result, I felt like it was the right time and I’m genuinely grateful for the opportunity to become an Associate.

What resources—books, mentors, training—have been most helpful to you?

Firstly, I’d like to credit my family—especially my parents—for laying the foundation. Their support and values have played a huge role in shaping my approach to work and life. Within Synergy, I’ve been fortunate over the past 11+ years to have had many great mentors. There are too many to list, but I’d especially like to thank Denis (Ulyet), Jon (Cook), and Ken (Mark) for their time and the foundational knowledge they’ve shared. A special thanks also goes to Eric (Anderson) for his time and for guiding me through all those challenging APC question-and-answer sessions. Outside of work, team sports like rugby and cricket have given me so much.

What strategies do you use to foster collaboration among your team members?

Set the standard, Work hard! Play hard! Show appreciation to those who are supporting you with a thank you. I also think it’s important to create space for informal catch-ups and unwinding after work – whether it’s a coffee or a pint at the end of the week.

What are your short-term and long-term goals in this new position?

In the short term, my plan is to continue delivering on project work while also looking for opportunities to support other areas of the business where I can add value. Long term, I’d like to play a part in helping Synergy grow—whether that’s through developing client relationships, mentoring others, or contributing to strategic initiatives. Ultimately, my ambition is to work towards Partnership and continue building a meaningful career within the firm.

Are there particular projects or initiatives you are passionate about leading?

I’m passionate about helping to develop the very talented young surveyors who have joined Synergy. Supporting their growth and sharing the knowledge I’ve gained over the years is something I genuinely enjoy. I’m also committed to continuing to spread the word about the surveying profession—whether that’s through school visits, mentoring, or simply being an advocate for the value we bring to the industry.

Where do you see opportunities for growth or improvement within the team or organisation?

There’s always room for improvement, and I believe we can continue to find ways to be more efficient in how we work. I also think there’s always something new to learn, whether that’s through technology, collaboration, or evolving industry practices. I do have a few ideas for growth and development, which I’ll keep to myself for now—but I’m looking forward to exploring them when the time is right.

What advice would you give to others aspiring to move up within the company?

My advice would be: work hard, be present, and be yourself. Consistency, reliability, and authenticity go a long way. If you stay engaged, keep learning, and support those around you, doors will open.

What role has feedback—both giving and receiving—played in your success?

Feedback has been really helpful in understanding both what I do well and where I can improve. It’s played a key role in my development over the years. When I give feedback, I try to be honest and constructive…that said, you’d probably need to ask my colleagues how well I do that!

Can you share a quote or philosophy that inspires you in your professional journey?

“Get On The Boat!” – something my brothers and I say. Basically pick yourself up and keep on going.

Can you give an example of how you’ve inspired or motivated others?

That’s a big question! Wow! To inspire others is a very special thing. One example that stands out is helping to start the colts session at our village cricket club back in 2014, alongside the club chairman and a few others. We are just a small village cricket club – Sunday village cricket, that sort of thing. We had about five kids per session back then, but over time, it’s turned into something lasting. Today, one of those kids is now Vice Captain of the senior cricket team and several others are playing cricket at the club or elsewhere. Knowing I played a part in their journey is very special to me – I’m very proud of that.

How do you prioritise competing demands and deadlines?

With difficulty! Every day I make a to do list and priortise each task.

What aspects of the company culture have supported your growth and success?

What’s really supported my growth at Synergy is the approachable culture and the strong sense of teamwork. We work well together, and there’s a genuine willingness to help one another. Everyone brings their own strengths and weaknesses, but I truly believe that the sum is greater than the parts. That collaborative spirit has made a big difference in my development.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

Learn how to make a good cup of tea!

What are you most proud of accomplishing in your career to date?

I’m most proud of achieving chartered status and, more recently, my promotion to Associate. Both milestones represent years of hard work, learning, and commitment to the profession. They’ve each marked important steps in my career and have given me the confidence to keep pushing forward.

What excites you most about the future?

The journey to Partnership!
