Our Projects: Maude Community Centre
The new two-story sports and community pavilion and annex is a new social hub for New Romney.
The new state-of-the-art public facility has replaced an existing sports pavilion that had reached the end of its lifespan and was no longer fit for purpose. The vision was to improve community cohesion in New Romney, improving access to a wide range of clubs, activities and wellbeing services.
The Maude Community Hall, on the first floor of the main building, is a large airy room complete with underfloor heating, a kitchen and a bar.
The ground floor is home to New Romney Town Football Club, New Romney Youth Football and New Romney Cricket Club and comprises clubroom space, a spectator area, changing rooms and toilet facilities (as well as accessible facilities).
Flexible design enables the community spaces to be used simultaneously and to change in size depending on the nature of the booking.
A modern annex sits adjacent to the main centre and is home to a nursery during the week and is available for hire for events or activities on the weekend.
In addition, the project has created ample parking, durable footpaths, a boot wash, a cycle store and a viewing area for supporters.
Sustainable Construction
A combination of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and material choices helped to achieve a cost-effective and environmentally efficient building.
The cross-laminated timber (CLT) frame of the main building could be manufactured off site and then lifted into place, reducing costs and disruption to the local community.
The annex is topped off with a sedum green roof which acts as a natural insulator, reducing heat transfer and regulating indoor temperatures – resulting in energy savings. It also provides helps to reduce carbon emissions and improve biodiversity in the area.
To optimise energy-efficiency and comfort internally, heat source pumps and a Passivent natural ventilation system have been installed.
