Our Projects: North West Washrooms at West Horsley Place

West Horsley Place is Grade I listed manor house set within a 380-acre estate, including a historic Grade II listed five-acre walled garden and a Grade II listed 18th and 19th century farm complex with a stable block, barn and outbuildings.

The project involved the creation of new fully accessible washroom facilities within this magnificent Grade I listed house dating from the mid-15th Century.  Following preliminary work by another architect, The Goddard Partnership’s design carefully threaded through the historic fabric which has been carefully conserved as found.

This project forms an initial phase of a much wider project to conserve the house and the other buildings within the estate, which had been in private ownership until 2015 when it was inherited by Bamber and Christina Gascoigne from Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe.

Through their generosity the Mary Roxburghe Trust was established with the entire estate donated to the Trust alongside the proceeds of the sale of the Duchess’s possessions, to fund the most urgent work. The charity’s objectives have been to restore the estate to its former glory, as well as to open up the house to the public to provide a welcoming space to share and enjoy with arts, culture, history and nature at its heart.

Following the creation of the Trust and the development of the new facilities, the building and gardens have become a focus of activity for over 100 local volunteers working in the gardens and the house.

The house is now opened for Heritage Open Days, as well as other community based events including a Christmas Craft Fair and as the venue for Surrey Arts.

Synergy provided Project Management services on this rewarding project.

We were delighted to hear that this project has been shortlisted for the RICS South East Region, Social Impact Awards in the Heritage Category. It has already received a platinum "loo of the year" award.
